Can architecture tell a story? What does it mean to narrate space? Could the sacred and the everyday life merge? The above questions are the main thrust of the project, as it emphasizes the urban and social potential of contemporary pilgrimage movements in the peripheral Israeli city of Tiberias.
This project is an extension of both a professional as well as a personal research, investigating local identities in Israeli architecture. In this quest, I have visited peripheral areas across the country, seeking to understand what occurs beyond the consensus of the Israeli urban triangle: Tel Aviv - Jerusalem - Haifa. The marginal communities, poor and forgotten by the government as well as the architectural institution, were my source of inspiration and a reference for an indigenous culture, social as well as architectural. The motivation to reveal the matter and the beauty of these marginal communities and what it could offer to contemporary Israeli society and culture, has allowed me the opportunity to ask key questions about the socio-cultural function of urban space and how else it could be organised, planned and imagined than the current conventions and norms of contemporary urban design.
