The task of the thesis was to develope a concept for living at the given area in Basel. A main point was to incorporate the industrial history of the area and the existing development and institutions. The concept should be elaborate on this basis with a living part of ca. 80% and a business part of ca. 20%. The existing buildings could be part of the masterplan.
The project uses to combine the given program with the area, the industrial history of the area and the environment. A main point for me was to receive the industrial identity in the later concept and the design of the project. Existing structures that have a good substance to be converted in living spaces will stay existent. (e.g. the existing wine warehouse). Different places with different qualities and memorability should be developed - places that allow the residents of the project to identify with. Places for provision and recreation should be established. In connection with the program of living spaces and the question: How does living of tomorrow look like? I have made the conclusion: The living of the future will have a strong form of collaborative living because in a more and more engineered world the relationships between humans will be more and more important for a balanced healthy life. A broad mix of different appartments should have an effect against social monotony so that a big range of different people have the possibility to live together. The proposal of different businesses is based upon the demand. (e.g. a retailer for the local amenities, a district office etc.) Summarizing the quintessences of the project: - preservation of good structures and inclusion in the new design - living as a form of collaborative living - adaptation in the environment - developing places with different qualities - preservation of the industrial identity
