The once swampy waterways of the Hanság landscape have dried up due to human interventions, threatening the traditions and livelihoods of local communities. The Hanság Tudásház aims to restore the balance between man and nature. The research station will help to monitor the environment and promote a sustainable approach through educational and tourism programmes. The building's use of materials and its formal design are integral parts of the landscape, reflecting respect for nature and awareness of human intervention.
The Hanság has defined the lives of its inhabitants for centuries, but human interventions have changed the water and ecological balance of the landscape. The draining of the marshes has not only transformed the environment, but also changed the way of life of local communities. The Hanság Tudásház responds to this problem, aiming to redefine the relationship between humans and nature and strengthen it through sustainable means. The main design objective was to create a building that promotes the preservation of environmental and cultural values and creates new opportunities for scientific research, education and ecotourism. It was also important that the building's use of material should blend in with its surroundings, minimising its ecological footprint. The Tudásház serves as a research station monitoring the environment, an educational center offering interactive learning on natural and cultural heritage, and a venue with exhibitions and programs enhancing the area's appeal. The building's design and use of materials are based on its surroundings. The structure is mainly made of wood, while the coverings is made of local materials - typha and reed - in homage to the traditions of the region. The massing reflects the functions: the laboratory and workshop are located at either end of the building, while the open space in the middle can be used as a lecture room or an exhibition space as well. The result of the design process is a building that not only meets the challenges of the environment aesthetically and functionally, but also plays an attitude-shaping role. The Hanság Tudásház bridges the gap between past and present, between man and nature, providing an opportunity for visitors to reconnect with their environment and understand its values.
