ArtHouse 500+1 is a physical manifesto presenting situation of people living in Berlin, at the time of existence of the Iron Curtain, as well as the social transformations after its fall, enclosed in a metaphorical framework of physical, five hundred doors - a symbol of the fallen Berlin Wall and human desire to create a cohesive and sustainable community.
ArtHouse. 500+1 is the result of an idea, based on numerous social-political-historical studies, symbolism and squat culture. One should know, that artistic community took a huge part in fighting with regime for personal freedom. After the fall of the Berlin Wall they used abandoned buildings, to create squats - one of the strongest Berlins identities, which city authorities decided to close and treat as illegal few years back, taking freedom from the people for the second time.\nCollected materials, as well as conducted site inspection of the whole Kreuzberg district allowed me to understand the situation of the inhabitants of this extraordinary and extremely original part of Berlin. It all resulted in designing the experimental object, divided into three main parts - public green area - the meadow -, semi-public space of the gallery with additional services and the house - last floor dedicated for the artistic community. But Art House 500 + 1 was never supposed to be a typical building, but rather an object which would eventually become a kind of a consensus between the expectations of the city authorities and the needs of the residents, who wish to be free to express their own ideas and create a needed space.\nIt would be an object, which permanently would be placed in urban space, recognized by various social groups and give its owners a freedom of interpretation, literally and figuratively.\nFinally, the ArtHOuse. 500+1 was supposed to be a physical manifesto, talking about a situation of people living in Berlin, at the time of existence of the Iron Curtain, as well as the social transformations after its fall, enclosed in a metaphorical framework of physical, five hundred doors, that are supposed to become a symbol not only of the fallen Berlin Wall, but the human desire to create a cohesive and sustainable community.
