The UMA campus is structured around an axis that lacks identity and fragments rather than unites. While efforts are underway to address this, the current plan does not tackle the most complex area, where the boulevard splits into three, intersected by roads to the hospital and campus traffic routes. The campus is solely academic, with little space for extracurricular activities, which are key to developing soft skills, relationships, and idea exchange. As students grow older, leisure based on consumption dominates, not only due to interest but also the lack of alternative options.
Artefact is the proposal for the UMA-Center, a project that functions as a machine catalyzing activity through individual devices like Dark Kitchen, Loop, and Puente. Departing from the closed architectural typology of the campus, Artefact embraces an open, tectonic design that integrates with the Urban Ecosystems’ Hubs, reinforcing the Boulevard Louis Pasteur as a technological backbone and identity marker. Designed as a club center for university students, the project aims to restore extracurricular engagement, fostering learning, soft skills, and social interaction beyond school hours. The transition to adulthood often reduces student participation in such activities due to time constraints or a lack of communal spaces. Artefact seeks to counteract this trend by providing a structured yet flexible environment for collaboration. Functionally, Artefact takes the form of a cycle bridge that reconnects the fragmented boulevard and encourages sustainable mobility. It incorporates a "dark kitchen," replacing traditional university canteens with a delivery-focused model that serves both students and the broader community. A modular architectural system, centered around the Box unit, allows for adaptable spatial configurations based on demand, ensuring long-term flexibility. Ultimately, Artefact is an evolving architectural process that remains relevant only through continued use. It embodies raw, adaptable design, shaped by the people who inhabit it, proving that the greatest architect is human activity itself.
