Alento-Foro river contract and urban regeneration

The degree thesis proposes the creation of a cognitive and interpretative framework of the Alento and Foro basins, to arrive at the definition of good practices for urban and environmental redevelopment and of a pilot project, aimed at mitigating the hydrogeological risk caused by the cementification of the riverbed .

The strategic vision takes into account all the resources identified: qualitative protection measures are envisaged; rebalancing the hydrological regime of rivers; safeguarding the river corridor and its ecosystem; rehabilitation / general improvement of the geomorphological structure; prevention of further actions of artificialization and removal of environmental and landscape degradation situations. Furthermore, the following were foreseen: - regeneration of the connection of the villages with the fluvial course through shared enhancement actions; - creation of an agricultural park and provision of management policies for the purification system, with particular regard to the polluting inputs caused by winemaking production; - enhancement of the trail network and the formation of a new cross-border connection to re-establish the relationship between the main villages and the redeveloped riverbanks; - recovery and protection of rural paths, enhancing them for their historical value and territorial connection; - protection of the parks and SIC (Site of Community Importance) areas falling into the basins, in addition to the tourist-recreational development with the formation of a network of dissemination and awareness. From the strategic vision come Masterplan and program of actions, divided according to three priority policies: mobility, green system, routes and connections. The pilot project involves the mouth of the river Alento and is divided into four progressive phases, in accordance with the objectives of the River Contract: the decreement of the river banks; the restitution of the original geomorphological structure; the renaturalization of river banks and the return of a river park to the community. The new fluvial park then creates the existing agricultural plot and riparian vegetation, with the new corridor, modeled with steps starting from the natural slope of the site, respecting the existing flooded areas.
