Aflenz’s decline began with the collapse of tourism, leading to economic stagnation, business closures, vacancies, and population loss. Sprawl and poor planning emptied the historic centre. Key infrastructure deteriorated, and public spaces became parking lots dominated by traffic. Meanwhile Aflenz has potential: idyllic nature, historic buildings, mild climate, and an ideal location. A lack of tourism led Aflenz into crisis—can a Nanotourism concept revive it by repurposing vacant spaces and infrastructure for locals and visitors alike?
Understanding Aflenz’s struggles, this project applies the principles of Nanotourism - critical, participatory, bottom-up, site-specific, local, social, responsible, inventive, and educative - to counteract this negative spiral in three phases: Transforming the public space, reactivating prominent vacancies, and implementing the Albergo Diffuso concept. The public space transforms into a social hub. Its design derives from an analysis of public elements, regaining lost qualities. The hidden brook is uncovered, enhancing the microclimate. The traditional market is reinstated. The narrow historical street gains a linear functional zone with greenery, seating, outdoor dining, lighting, and commercial areas. Prominent vacancies are transformed to boost the community. The monastery becomes a cultural nucleus for hosting events. The deteriorated outdoor pool is adapted for year-round use, using a local thermal spring. The tavern Schwarzer Adler reopens, strengthening local gastronomy. The former upholsterer turns into a pottery café, leveraging local craftsmanship. The old bank transforms into a bike workshop and charity shop, promoting social inclusion. Smaller sites host an Artist-in-Residence program, embedding culture into the village fabric. The Albergo Diffuso concept interweaves architecture, tourism, and art history, adapting existing structures for touristic usage. Its Base Building is established in the Pistoryhaus. A detailed construction history analysis revealed Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical layers, allowing sensitive spatial interventions explored through model studies. These were combined with the Albergo Diffuso program, introducing a ground-floor zone for breakfast, a lobby, a workation space, and an open atelier.
