The market place, besides the city hall and the church, has always been the most important part of the center of the 4th district. However, from the 1970s on, the service area of the introverted late-modern market buildings occupied the public space of St. Stephen Square. The purpose of the transformation is to give this space back to pedestrians and events.

The historic Market Hall is in desperate need of modernizing and during the period of its refurbishment there was a need to create a temporary Market Hall on the adjacent square. The temporary structure has been a popular success with almost twice as many visitors per week as the historic Market Hall and an increase in the trader’s turnover of up to 50%.

The starting point for this task was a typical challenge in Oslo: densification in an area of existing single family houses. The house is broken up into smaller volumes to adapt to the relatively tight situation and the scale of the surrounding buildings. Prioritizing the enjoyment of the garden, and the interior openness of the spaces.

The collective housing contains a system of 110 rooms, which can be used as desired. Answering to the client’s demand, each apartment can be expanded or reduced adding or subtracting rooms in order to answer to inhabitants needs. With that flexibility in mind, rooms are similar eliminating any type of spatial hierarchy and program predetermination.

The West Terminal 2 ferry terminal in Helsinki was built to meet the needs of the growing ferry traffic on the Helsinki-Tallinn route. The primary and ultimately sole purpose of a ferry terminal is to ensure the smooth passage of passengers and vehicles on and off ships. A room extends over time incorporating fences, and a stable contains crops and provides shelter to animals. The present structure, embedded in the section of the hill, is a belvedere towards the valley nestling the outskirts of the city. On the Alfama slope, Lisbon is an amphitheatre looking out into the Tagus estuary. At the foot of the hill, on the flats of the early 20th century landfill of the port, the building of the new Cruise Terminal echoes, and returns, the gaze: a small amphitheatre, apparently with its back to the river, looks back at the city.

Through the design process, architect Jovan Mitrović proposed to sink the whole volume of sports hall two thirds under the ground level, providing larger open area for children’s outdoor activities. He resolved the problem of the influence of underground water by designing the waterproof concrete hull five meters deep in the ground.

Pontsteiger (‘ferrypier’) is a large-scale residential project in Amsterdam. The building is located at the end of a 200 metre dam that projects into the water of the river IJ. The ‘Big Friendly Giant’ foreshadows Amsterdam’s growth of high-rise buildings around river IJ. The design creates not just an iconic object but a public space within itself.

De Krook is the new city library of Ghent, intended as an ‘open house for knowledge and innovation’ and cultural catalyst to the city. . The stark metallic structure lies along the waterfront and offers an interesting contrast with the surrounding historic monuments. What used to be a neglected corner of the city is now a ‘balcony to the city’.
